LACNIC, the Latin American and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry, is a non-governmental, non-profit organization crucial for the Internet's infrastructure in its service region. Established in 2002, LACNIC is responsible for the allocation and administration of Internet Number Resources, including IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs). Beyond resource management, LACNIC actively promotes regional Internet development through policy development, capacity building, training programs, and fostering a collaborative community. It plays a vital role in advocating for a stable, secure, open, and evolving Internet, supporting the unique needs and growth of the digital ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Serves as the central administrative, operational, policy-making, and community engagement hub for LACNIC. It houses technical infrastructure, staff offices, and facilities for regional and international Internet governance activities.
Located in the 'Casa de Internet de Latinoamérica y el Caribe,' which also hosts other key Internet organizations such as LACTLD, RedCLara, LAC-IX, and regional offices/presence for ICANN, .ORG, Public Interest Registry, and the Internet Society. This co-location fosters significant collaboration and synergy. The facility includes modern conference rooms and technical operations centers.
Collaborative, community-focused, and mission-driven, emphasizing transparency, neutrality, and active participation in Internet governance. The culture is dedicated to serving the technical and Internet community of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The headquarters is the nerve center for Internet resource management and development initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Its co-location within Casa de Internet makes it a vital regional nexus for Internet policy, technical coordination, and community building.
While LACNIC's primary operational mandate covers Latin America and the Caribbean, it maintains a significant global presence through active collaboration within the international Internet governance ecosystem. This includes close partnerships with the other four Regional Internet Registries (RIRs: AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, RIPE NCC) via the Number Resource Organization (NRO). LACNIC also actively participates in global forums such as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet Society (ISOC), and various UN-led initiatives like the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). These engagements ensure global policy coordination, interoperability, and the sharing of best practices for managing Internet number resources worldwide.
