Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a U.S.-based non-governmental organization dedicated to providing free legal counsel and advocating for the rights and well-being of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. Co-founded in 2008 by Microsoft Corporation and Angelina Jolie, KIND partners with a vast network of pro bono attorneys, corporations, law firms, and volunteers to ensure these vulnerable children receive legal representation in their deportation proceedings. Beyond legal aid, KIND focuses on policy advocacy, public education, and international programs to address the root causes of child migration and protect children throughout their journey, ensuring their safety and access to justice.
Serves as the central administrative and operational hub, overseeing national programs, policy advocacy, fundraising, communications, legal strategy, and overall strategic direction for KIND's mission.
Strategically located in downtown Washington D.C., enabling close collaboration with governmental bodies, policymakers, and partner organizations. The office space is modern and designed to support a large national and international non-profit operation.
Highly mission-driven, passionate, and collaborative. Employees are deeply committed to child welfare and immigrant rights, fostering an environment of dedication, advocacy, and resilience.
The headquarters is critical for coordinating KIND's extensive network of pro bono attorneys and field offices across the U.S., leading national advocacy efforts on immigration policy, and managing international programs.
KIND extends its mission beyond the U.S. through strategic international programs. Key areas include its Mexico Initiative, providing legal aid and protection to children in transit or seeking asylum in Mexico. KIND also engages in Central America (e.g., Guatemala, Honduras) to address root causes of migration and support children's rights through partnerships and capacity building. In Europe, KIND works to share its model and expertise to assist unaccompanied children seeking protection. These global functions involve direct services where operational, policy advocacy, research, and collaboration with international organizations and local partners to safeguard children's rights across borders.
