Jaeger is an open-source, end-to-end distributed tracing system designed for monitoring and troubleshooting complex microservices-based applications. Originally created by Uber Engineering and open-sourced in 2015, Jaeger was accepted as a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) incubating project in 2017 and graduated in 2019. It provides tools for distributed context propagation, distributed transaction monitoring, root cause analysis, service dependency analysis, and performance/latency optimization. Jaeger supports OpenTelemetry and OpenTracing APIs and various storage backends like Cassandra, Elasticsearch, and Kafka, making it a versatile solution for developers and Site Reliability Engineers (SREs).
The CNCF provides vendor-neutral stewardship, legal and marketing support, resources, and a framework for the Jaeger project's long-term sustainability and community growth.

The Jaeger project is community-driven. Maintainer roles evolve based on sustained contributions and community consensus rather than formal executive hires or exits typical of a corporation. Changes to the maintainer team are managed within the project's governance structure on GitHub (MAINTAINERS.md) and are generally not publicized as 'executive news'. The focus is on project health and continuity through active community participation.
