The Indiana Supreme Court is the highest appellate court in the State of Indiana. Established by the Indiana Constitution, it has the ultimate authority in interpreting Indiana law and the Indiana Constitution. The Court consists of five justices, including a Chief Justice. Its responsibilities include hearing appeals directly from certain lower court decisions, reviewing decisions of the Indiana Court of Appeals, supervising the administration of all Indiana courts, and overseeing the admission and discipline of attorneys licensed to practice in Indiana. Its decisions set legal precedents that guide all other courts in the state.
Serves as the seat of Indiana's highest appellate court, where oral arguments are heard, judicial conferences are held, and administrative functions of the Court are managed.
Located within the historic Indiana State House, an architecturally significant building featuring Renaissance Revival style, a prominent dome, and grand interior spaces. The courtroom itself is designed with decorum and symbolism reflecting the gravity of the judicial process.
Highly formal, professional, and intellectually rigorous, focused on interpreting and applying state law, upholding the constitution, and ensuring the fair administration of justice. Emphasis on legal scholarship, precedent, and deliberative decision-making among the justices and their staff.
As the state's court of last resort, its decisions shape Indiana law and impact all citizens and businesses within the state. Its location in the State House underscores its role as a co-equal branch of state government.
The Indiana Supreme Court's jurisdiction is confined to the State of Indiana. It does not have a global presence; its authority and decisions apply solely within the geographical boundaries of Indiana, interpreting and applying state law and the Indiana Constitution.
