The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) is a globally recognized, non-profit, non-political, international organization that conducts agricultural research for development in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Established in 1972, ICRISAT's mission is to help empower 600 million poor people to overcome hunger, poverty, and environmental degradation in the drylands through better agriculture. ICRISAT focuses on improving major crops like sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, chickpea, pigeonpea, and groundnut, while also championing sustainable farming practices, climate-smart agriculture, and inclusive market-oriented development. We work with a vast network of partners to deliver innovative solutions that enhance food security, nutrition, and livelihoods for smallholder farmers in some of the world's harshest environments.
The global headquarters in Patancheru serves as the nerve center for ICRISAT's worldwide research, strategic planning, capacity building, and administrative operations. It hosts advanced research laboratories, extensive experimental farms, and a world-class genebank.
The campus spans 1394 hectares and includes state-of-the-art research facilities, the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Agri-S&T Park (DISC), modern laboratories, controlled environment facilities, and one of the world's largest repositories of dryland crop genetic resources in its genebank (holding over 129,000 accessions). The campus is also known for its biodiversity and sustainable land management practices.
ICRISAT fosters a highly collaborative, multicultural, and mission-driven work environment. Scientists, researchers, and support staff from diverse nationalities work together, emphasizing scientific excellence, innovation, and tangible impact on smallholder farmers' lives. The culture promotes continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and partnerships.
The ICRISAT headquarters is a globally significant hub for agricultural research and innovation focused on the semi-arid tropics. Its strategic location in India, a major dryland region, allows for direct engagement with the challenges faced by local farmers, while its research outputs and collaborations have a far-reaching global impact on food security and sustainable development.
ICRISAT maintains a significant global presence, primarily targeting the semi-arid and tropical dryland regions of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Its operations are structured around its headquarters in India and regional hubs in Eastern & Southern Africa (Nairobi, Kenya) and West & Central Africa (Bamako, Mali), along with several country offices (e.g., Niger, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Ethiopia). Globally, ICRISAT supports functions such as strategic research on its mandate crops (sorghum, millets, chickpea, pigeonpea, groundnut), conservation and use of plant genetic resources, development of climate-smart agricultural technologies, policy advocacy, capacity strengthening of national partners, and fostering agribusiness ventures to ensure that research innovations reach and benefit smallholder farmers.
