The campus was known for its scenic location on 60 acres, beautiful mid-century architecture including the McLean Chapel, the Paul J. Cushing Library, and the Valley Center for the Performing Arts. Its hillside setting offered panoramic views of the Bay Area.

Work Culture:

Prior to its closure, HNU aimed to foster a close-knit community environment with a focus on student support, social justice, and service, reflecting its Catholic heritage. Faculty and staff were generally dedicated to the university's mission of empowering a diverse student body.

HQ Significance:

The campus was significant as the long-standing home of an institution that educated thousands of students for over 150 years, contributing to the educational and cultural landscape of the Bay Area. Its closure marked the end of an era for its alumni, faculty, staff, and the local community.

Values Reflected in HQ: The campus design and atmosphere historically aimed to reflect values of academic excellence, community, spiritual growth, and service, consistent with the mission of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. The university emphasized access to education and social mobility for its students.

Location:

As a regional university, Holy Names University's primary focus was on serving students in California and the wider United States. It did not have a significant global physical presence in terms of international campuses or offices. Its global engagement, prior to its closure in May 2023, was primarily through international student enrollment, some faculty research with international scope, and alumni networks.
