Hiwassee College was a private liberal arts college located in Madisonville, Tennessee. Founded in 1849, it was historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church. For 170 years, the college provided associate and bachelor's degree programs, serving students primarily from East Tennessee and surrounding regions. Known for its scenic campus in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and a close-knit community atmosphere, Hiwassee College unfortunately faced significant financial challenges and declining student enrollment, which led to its permanent closure in May 2019. Its legacy continues through its many alumni and the historical contributions it made to education in the region.
The campus served as the sole center for all academic programs, administrative operations, student residential life, and extracurricular activities of the former college.
The campus was recognized for its picturesque rural setting, several historic buildings (including Brunner Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places), and its location near the Cherokee National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains.
(Historically) The work culture at Hiwassee College was characterized by a small, dedicated faculty and staff committed to student-centered learning within a faith-influenced liberal arts tradition. It fostered a close-knit, supportive community environment.
For 170 years, the Hiwassee College campus was a vital educational and cultural hub in its rural East Tennessee region, providing higher education opportunities and contributing to the local community and the United Methodist Church's educational mission.
As a small, regional liberal arts college based in rural Tennessee, Hiwassee College did not maintain a global presence through international campuses or offices. Its primary mission was to serve students within its region and the United States, although it did welcome international students to its Madisonville campus historically.
