The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of municipal government in Canada, representing the interests of nearly 2,000 cities and communities with the federal government. FCM advocates for federal policies that support strong, resilient, and sustainable communities, delivers programs funded by the federal government (such as the Green Municipal Fund), and provides a platform for municipal leaders to share best practices and innovation. Its membership spans Canada's largest cities, small urban and rural communities, and 20 provincial and territorial municipal associations.
Serves as the central hub for FCM's national advocacy efforts, program administration (including the Green Municipal Fund), member services, research, and corporate operations.
Located in Ottawa's historic ByWard Market district, offering close proximity to Parliament Hill and key federal government departments. The office is a modern facility designed to support collaboration and engagement.
A mission-driven, collaborative, and professional environment focused on public policy, advocacy for municipal interests, and delivering impactful programs. The culture values expertise, member engagement, and achieving positive outcomes for Canadian communities.
The Ottawa headquarters is pivotal for FCM's mandate to represent Canadian municipalities at the federal level, enabling direct advocacy, policy development, and partnership building on national issues impacting local governments.
While FCM's core mandate is domestic, it has a history of managing international programs focused on strengthening local governance in developing countries. These initiatives leverage Canadian municipal expertise in areas like sustainable development, climate adaptation, gender equality, and inclusive local economic development, fostering partnerships and knowledge exchange between Canadian municipalities and their international counterparts. These programs are typically funded by Global Affairs Canada.
