The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) is a research facility of superlatives. It generates extremely intense X-ray flashes, 27,000 times per second, with a brilliance that is a billion times higher than that of the best conventional X-ray sources. These unique characteristics open up entirely new research opportunities for scientists and industrial users from all over the world in fields such as life sciences, chemistry, physics, materials science, and more, allowing them to map the atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions, and study processes in the interior of planets.
Serves as the primary research and operational hub, housing the 3.4 km long accelerator tunnel, photon beamlines, undulator systems, and six underground experimental stations where X-ray flashes interact with samples.
A 3.4-kilometer-long underground tunnel system, state-of-the-art experimental hutches, the world's longest superconducting linear accelerator, and advanced detector technology.
Highly international and collaborative, bringing together scientists, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff from over 50 countries. The culture is research-driven, innovative, and focused on enabling cutting-edge science.
As the world's largest and most powerful X-ray laser, its headquarters is a global beacon for research in various scientific domains, pushing the boundaries of what can be observed at the atomic and molecular level.
European XFEL functions as a global user facility, serving thousands of scientists from research institutions and companies across the world. Its operations are supported by an international consortium of 12 member countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom (Russia's participation as a founding member is currently suspended). This international collaboration is fundamental to its funding, governance, and scientific program, ensuring it remains a leading global hub for X-ray science.
