The European Vaccine Initiative (EVI) is a non-profit product development partnership (PDP) dedicated to developing effective, accessible, and affordable vaccines against diseases of poverty and emerging infectious diseases. EVI works with a global network of partners from academia, public research institutions, and biotechnology companies to translate promising vaccine candidates from preclinical research through to clinical development, often up to Phase IIb proof-of-concept. Their key focus areas include malaria, diarrheal diseases, neglected tropical diseases, and emerging pandemic threats. EVI plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between basic research and late-stage vaccine development for diseases disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries.
Serves as the central hub for EVI's global operations, including scientific coordination, project management, fundraising, advocacy, financial administration, and partnership management for its vaccine development programs.
Located within the Heidelberg University Hospital campus, providing close proximity to world-class research facilities and a vibrant biomedical ecosystem. This strategic positioning fosters collaborations with leading scientists and institutions.
A mission-driven, collaborative, and international environment focused on scientific excellence, innovation, and addressing global health inequities. The culture emphasizes teamwork, agility, and a strong commitment to making a tangible impact on diseases affecting vulnerable populations.
The Heidelberg HQ is pivotal for orchestrating EVI's complex international projects, securing funding, and leveraging Germany's and Europe's strong biomedical research infrastructure to advance its vaccine pipeline.
While headquartered in Germany with a country office in Uganda, EVI's operational footprint is global. It supports and manages vaccine development projects and clinical trials across numerous countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Its global presence is defined by its extensive network of academic partners, research institutions, contract research organizations (CROs), and public health bodies in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries. Functions supported globally include preclinical and clinical research management, technical expertise provision, capacity strengthening in trial sites, and engagement with global health stakeholders.
