The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to molecular biology research and is supported by 29 member states, two associate member states and one prospective member state. EMBL performs fundamental research in molecular biology, provides training to scientists, students and visitors at all levels, offers vital services to the scientific community, develops new instruments and methods in the life sciences, and actively engages in technology transfer. EMBL operates from six sites: Heidelberg (Germany), Hinxton (EMBL-EBI, UK), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Rome (Italy), and Barcelona (Spain).
The Heidelberg site is EMBL's largest research and administrative hub, hosting numerous research units, advanced core facilities, the EMBL International PhD Programme, and the EMBL Advanced Training Centre. It drives fundamental research across a wide spectrum of molecular biology.
State-of-the-art core facilities including the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility, Electron Microscopy Core Facility, Genomics Core Facility, and the iconic EMBL Advanced Training Centre known for its double-helix inspired architecture.
A highly international, collaborative, and multidisciplinary environment that fosters scientific excellence, open communication, and innovation. There's a strong emphasis on training, mentorship, and career development for scientists at all stages.
As the main laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg spearheads major research initiatives, sets strategic scientific directions for the organization, and serves as the primary center for training and administrative operations, significantly impacting European life sciences.
EMBL, through its six European sites, supports the global scientific community by conducting fundamental research in molecular biology, providing open access to major biological databases and bioinformatics tools (primarily via EMBL-EBI), offering advanced training programs for scientists worldwide, fostering international collaborations, and championing open science. Its research findings, services, and alumni network have a far-reaching impact on life sciences globally.
