The Downtown Women's Center (DWC) is the only organization in Los Angeles focused exclusively on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women. Founded in 1978, DWC provides permanent supportive housing, comprehensive support services including a Day Center, health and wellness programs, workforce development, and a trauma-informed approach to care. Their mission is to end homelessness for women in greater Los Angeles through housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy.
Serves as the primary service and day center, administrative hub, and provides 101 units of permanent supportive housing.
The facility includes a welcoming Day Center offering meals, showers, and safety; a health clinic; spaces for job training and skill development; a community garden; and on-site residential units. It is designed to be a safe, healing, and empowering environment.
The work culture at DWC is deeply mission-driven, characterized by compassion, collaboration, and a strong commitment to empowering women. Staff and volunteers often emphasize trauma-informed care, respect, and fostering a supportive community.
DWC's headquarters is a critical resource in Skid Row, providing a unique, women-specific safe haven. It's a central point for comprehensive support services, directly addressing the multifaceted needs of women experiencing homelessness and contributing to their journey towards stability and well-being.
The Downtown Women's Center's operations are focused exclusively on Los Angeles, California. It does not maintain a global operational presence, concentrating its efforts on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness within its local community.
