Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) is a globally acclaimed American neoclassical ballet company and school based in Harlem, New York City. Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell, the first African American principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, and Karel Shook, DTH was established in response to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. with the mission to provide classical ballet training to children in Harlem and to create a professional company that would offer opportunities to dancers of color. For over five decades, DTH has been a beacon of artistic excellence, challenging conventions, and enriching the cultural landscape through its powerful performances, rigorous training programs, and impactful community engagement initiatives. The organization remains committed to its founding principles of access, opportunity, and artistry.
Serves as the central hub for all artistic, educational, and administrative operations, including rehearsal studios for the professional company, classrooms for the DTH School, costume and production facilities, and offices for artistic and administrative staff.
The Everett Center for the Performing Arts features multiple state-of-the-art dance studios, a black box theatre (the DTH Theater), a physical therapy room, costume shop, and administrative offices. It's a purpose-built facility designed to support all facets of the organization.
The work culture at Dance Theatre of Harlem is characterized by dedication, artistic passion, collaboration, and a strong sense of community. There's a deep commitment to the mission of fostering diversity and excellence in ballet, creating an inspiring and demanding environment for dancers, students, faculty, and staff.
The headquarters is more than just a building; it's a cultural landmark in Harlem and a symbol of resilience, artistic achievement, and opportunity. It represents Arthur Mitchell's vision of creating a world-class ballet institution accessible to all, particularly communities of color.
While Dance Theatre of Harlem is headquartered and primarily operates from its base in New York City, its professional company has a significant global presence through extensive national and international touring. They perform in major cities and festivals across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, bringing their unique repertoire and artistic vision to diverse audiences worldwide. The organization also engages in international educational outreach and masterclasses during its tours.
