Copernicus is the European Union's Earth Observation Programme, looking at our planet and its environment for the ultimate benefit of all European citizens. It offers information services drawing from satellite Earth Observation and in-situ (non-space) data. The programme is coordinated and managed by the European Commission and is implemented in partnership with the Member States, the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), EU Agencies and Mercator Océan International. Copernicus provides vast amounts of global data from satellites and from ground-based, airborne and seaborne measurement systems which are processed and analysed to provide timely and reliable information and services across six thematic areas: land, marine, atmosphere, climate change, emergency management, and security.
Central coordination, strategic management, policy development, and oversight of the Copernicus Programme by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS).
Located within the European Quarter of Brussels, the hub of EU institutions. DG DEFIS offices are part of the broader European Commission administrative infrastructure.
Policy-driven, international, and highly collaborative, focusing on leveraging advanced space technology for the benefit of EU citizens, global environmental monitoring, and supporting EU policies.
Serves as the administrative and strategic core for one of the world's most ambitious Earth observation programmes, ensuring its alignment with EU objectives and effective delivery of services.
Copernicus provides data, information, and services globally. Its satellite constellation offers worldwide coverage, and its data is free and open to users across all continents. This supports international cooperation, global environmental monitoring, disaster risk reduction efforts worldwide, climate change research, and various security applications, making Copernicus a truly global initiative.
