The Charleston School of Law is a private, independent law school located in the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 2003, it received full accreditation from the American Bar Association (ABA) in 2011. The school is committed to public service, as reflected in its motto, 'Pro Bono Populi' – For the Good of the People. It offers a rigorous, skills-based legal education designed to prepare students for the practice of law through a comprehensive curriculum, experiential learning opportunities, and a supportive, student-focused environment.
Serves as the primary academic and administrative center, housing classrooms, faculty offices, student services, and administrative operations.
The campus incorporates beautifully restored historic Charleston buildings equipped with modern educational technology, including state-of-the-art classrooms and moot courtrooms. The Sol Blatt Jr. Law Library, though at a separate nearby address, is a key feature.
For faculty and staff, the culture is student-centric, emphasizing mentorship and practical legal training. The environment is collaborative, fostering legal scholarship and professional growth. For students, it's an engaging and supportive atmosphere promoting rigorous academic pursuit, hands-on experience, and a strong sense of community and public service.
The campus, centered around 81 Mary Street, is significant as the primary site for legal education and professional development in Charleston's historic downtown. It provides students with direct access to the city's legal community and courts, embedding legal training within a rich historical and professional context.
While primarily focused on legal education within the United States, Charleston School of Law supports a global perspective through study abroad programs in various countries. The school also welcomes international students and visiting scholars, enriching the campus environment. Its curriculum addresses international and comparative law, and its alumni practice in diverse jurisdictions globally.
