California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime or CMA) is a public university and one of the 23 campuses within the California State University system. Located in Vallejo, California, it is one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States and the only one on the West Coast. Cal Maritime offers specialized undergraduate degrees in areas such as marine transportation, engineering technology, international business and logistics, and oceanography. The academy is renowned for its hands-on experiential learning, including annual training voyages on its dedicated training ship, the Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB). Students, known as cadets, participate in a structured environment that emphasizes leadership, discipline, and practical skills relevant to the global maritime industry and related fields.
The campus serves as the central hub for all academic programs, student residential life, administrative operations, specialized training facilities (simulators, workshops), and is the home port for the Training Ship Golden Bear.
Waterfront location, Training Ship Golden Bear (TSGB), state-of-the-art bridge and engine room simulators, engineering laboratories, a modern library, athletic facilities, and student dormitories.
As an educational institution with a regimental component for licensed-track cadets, the campus culture emphasizes discipline, professionalism, teamwork, leadership development, and hands-on experiential learning. There's a strong sense of community and shared purpose among students, faculty, and staff.
The campus is strategically located for maritime training, providing access to major waterways and proximity to the Port of Oakland and San Francisco. It's a vital institution for educating and training professionals for the U.S. Merchant Marine and global maritime industries.
California Maritime Academy's primary global presence is manifested through its annual international training cruises aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear. These voyages take cadets to various international ports, providing real-world experience in global maritime operations. Additionally, many alumni work internationally in the maritime and related industries. The academy also participates in international academic exchange programs and attracts students from around the world.
