Berkeley Model United Nations (BMUN) is a student-run organization at the University of California, Berkeley, established in 1952. It hosts one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious Model United Nations conferences for high school students globally. BMUN is dedicated to fostering international awareness, critical thinking, and diplomatic skills among young leaders. Through its annual conference and educational outreach, BMUN provides a platform for thousands of students to engage with complex global issues, develop public speaking and negotiation abilities, and experience the challenges and rewards of international cooperation. The organization is managed entirely by UC Berkeley undergraduate students who are passionate about international relations and education.
Serves as the central organizational hub for planning and executing the annual BMUN conference, training student staff, developing educational materials, and managing external relations.
Operates within the vibrant and historic UC Berkeley campus, leveraging university resources, lecture halls, and event spaces for its large-scale conference.
Student-led, collaborative, and dynamic, with a strong emphasis on mentorship, leadership development, and a shared passion for international affairs and global education. The environment is academically stimulating and driven by student initiative.
The 'headquarters' at UC Berkeley is significant as it's the birthplace and continuous operational center of one of the world's pioneering Model UN conferences, influencing global civic education for decades.
While physically based at UC Berkeley, BMUN achieves a significant global presence primarily through its annual conference, which attracts over 2,000 high school delegates and advisors from across the United States and numerous countries worldwide. Its educational materials, alumni network, and the reputation of its conference contribute to its international impact in promoting global awareness and diplomatic education among youth.
