Bergen University College (Høgskolen i Bergen, HiB) was a prominent public higher education institution located in Bergen, Norway. Established in 1994 through the merger of several older, specialized colleges, HiB offered a diverse range of professionally oriented bachelor's and master's programs. On January 1, 2017, Bergen University College merged with Sogn og Fjordane University College and Stord/Haugesund University College to form the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (Høgskulen på Vestlandet, HVL). HVL continues the legacy and operations of its constituent colleges, with a significant presence in Bergen at the former HiB campus in Kronstad, serving as one of its main campuses. HVL focuses on providing high-quality education and research closely linked to regional needs and professional fields.
Serves as a major campus for HVL, hosting faculties such as Engineering and Science, Teacher Education, Arts and Sport, and Health and Social Sciences. It is a central hub for education, research, administration, and student life in the Bergen region for HVL.
The Kronstad campus is a modern, purpose-built facility with state-of-the-art learning spaces, laboratories, workshops, a large library, auditoriums, and student welfare services. It was designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
The campus promotes an academic culture focused on practice-oriented learning, innovation, research, and close collaboration with local industries and public sector organizations. It offers a dynamic and international environment for students and staff.
This campus represents the continuation of Bergen University College's educational mission within the larger HVL structure. It is a vital center for higher education and professional development in Western Norway, contributing significantly to the region's competence and workforce.
As a major Norwegian higher education institution, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) maintains a significant global presence through international student and staff exchange programs (e.g., Erasmus+), research collaborations with universities worldwide, participation in international educational networks, and joint projects. HVL actively recruits international students for its master's programs taught in English and fosters an internationalized learning environment across its campuses.
