The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is the UK's principal public funder of non-medical bioscience. BBSRC invests in world-class bioscience research and training on behalf of the UK public. Its aim is to further scientific knowledge, to promote economic growth, wealth and job creation and to improve quality of life in the UK and beyond. BBSRC supports research in universities and strategically funded institutes across the UK, focusing on areas such as food security, sustainable agriculture, bioenergy, industrial biotechnology, and fundamental bioscience underpinning health.
Serves as the central administrative and strategic hub for BBSRC, coordinating funding strategy, policy development, operations, and stakeholder engagement for UK bioscience research.
Part of the UKRI campus at Polaris House, a modern, purpose-built office complex designed to facilitate collaboration among research councils. It offers shared facilities and a central location for UKRI's Swindon-based operations.
A professional, collaborative, and intellectually stimulating environment focused on supporting and advancing UK bioscience. Emphasis on public service, scientific excellence, and effective stewardship of research funding.
As the central hub for BBSRC, Polaris House is critical for national strategy setting, grant administration, policy development, and stakeholder engagement for the UK's biotechnology and biological sciences research sector.
BBSRC fosters international research collaborations by funding joint projects, supporting researcher mobility, and engaging with international partners and organizations. While BBSRC itself does not typically maintain independent overseas offices, it leverages the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) international offices (e.g., in Brussels, China, India, North America) to promote UK bioscience, build partnerships, and facilitate global scientific exchange. This global engagement is crucial for addressing shared challenges in areas like food security, climate change, and health.
