The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is a distinguished non-profit organization founded in 1925. Its core mission is the protection, management, and promotion of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T.), an iconic footpath stretching nearly 2,200 miles from Georgia to Maine. The ATC leads a cooperative management system, working with the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, various state agencies, 31 local Trail-maintaining clubs, and thousands of volunteers. Their work encompasses trail maintenance and construction, land conservation to protect the Trail's corridor, environmental monitoring, educational programs, community engagement, and advocacy for policies that support the A.T. and its surrounding landscape. The ATC strives to ensure the A.T. remains a premier hiking experience and a protected natural and cultural resource for all to enjoy.
Serves as the national administrative, operational, and strategic hub for the Conservancy, coordinating efforts across the entire Appalachian Trail. It facilitates policy development, national fundraising, communications, and support for regional offices and volunteer clubs.
Located in the historic town of Harpers Ferry, which is itself a significant point along the Appalachian Trail and home to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The headquarters building often serves as a key information point for hikers and visitors.
A mission-driven, collaborative environment characterized by a deep passion for the Appalachian Trail and conservation. Staff often work closely with volunteers, government partners, and local communities.
The Harpers Ferry location is symbolic, placing the ATC's central operations directly on the Trail it serves and in a town rich with American history and natural beauty. It's a central point for Trail-wide coordination.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy's direct management and operational activities are concentrated on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail within the United States. However, the A.T. is an internationally renowned hiking destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. The ATC also participates in international trail conferences and shares best practices with trail organizations globally, contributing to a worldwide community dedicated to long-distance trails and conservation. It is a founding member of the World Trails Network.
