The American Writers Museum (AWM) is the first and only museum in the United States dedicated to celebrating American writers and their enduring contributions to our history, identity, culture, and daily lives. Opened in May 2017 in downtown Chicago, the AWM engages the public with the literary heritage of the nation through interactive exhibits, educational programs, and special events. It aims to inspire a love of reading and writing and to showcase the diversity and depth of American literary voices across genres and eras.
Serves as the primary public-facing museum location, housing all exhibits, educational programming spaces, a gift shop, and administrative offices.
Interactive exhibits such as 'A Nation of Writers,' 'The Mind of a Writer,' and 'Writers Hall'; a dedicated Children's Literature Gallery; state-of-the-art digital displays; and frequently rotating special exhibitions.
A mission-driven and collaborative environment, characterized by a passion for American literature, education, and providing an engaging and inclusive visitor experience. Staff are dedicated to fostering an appreciation for writing and storytelling.
As the first museum in the U.S. solely dedicated to American writers, it plays a unique and vital role in preserving the nation's literary heritage, promoting literacy, and inspiring current and future generations of readers and writers.
While its physical presence is in Chicago and its focus is on American writers, the American Writers Museum achieves a broader reach through its extensive online resources, including virtual tours, digital exhibits, and educational materials accessible to a global audience. It serves as a national cultural institution that contributes to the international appreciation of American literature and storytelling, and may collaborate with international literary organizations or scholars.
