The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a federation of physical science societies, founded in 1931. Its mission is to advance, promote, and serve the physical sciences for the benefit of humanity. AIP supports its Member Societies, provides resources for students and educators, publishes influential journals and magazines (through AIP Publishing LLC, its wholly-owned subsidiary), advocates for science policy, and preserves the history of physics. It acts as a unifying force for the physics community, fostering collaboration and disseminating knowledge globally.
Serves as the central administrative hub for AIP's operations, strategic initiatives, member society support, advocacy efforts, and historical preservation programs. It also houses some staff supporting AIP Publishing.
Located within a dedicated science park, the American Center for Physics, which fosters collaboration among physics organizations like the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The building features modern facilities for meetings, archival storage (Niels Bohr Library & Archives), and staff operations.
A mission-driven, collaborative, and intellectually stimulating environment. Employees are dedicated to supporting the physics community and advancing scientific understanding. Emphasis on professional development and service to the scientific enterprise.
The headquarters is a vital center for the U.S. physics community, symbolizing AIP's role in uniting various physics disciplines and promoting scientific progress. Its co-location with other physics organizations enhances synergy and collaborative efforts.
AIP achieves global presence primarily through AIP Publishing, which disseminates scientific research worldwide via its journals and publications, accessible in virtually every country. AIP supports international collaborations, participates in global science policy discussions, and its member societies often have international chapters and members. Programs like the Society of Physics Students (SPS) also have international chapters, extending AIP's reach to students globally. Its historical archives also attract international scholars.
