African Leadership Academy (ALA) is a world-class, pan-African secondary institution located in Johannesburg, South Africa. Founded in 2004 and officially opened in 2008, ALA's mission is to identify, develop, and connect the next generation of African leaders. The Academy offers a unique two-year pre-university program focused on Entrepreneurial Leadership, African Studies, and Writing & Rhetoric, alongside rigorous Cambridge A-Level academics, to outstanding students aged 16-19 from across the African continent and around the world. ALA aims to create a powerful network of ethical and innovative leaders who will work together to address Africa’s greatest challenges, achieve extraordinary social impact, and accelerate the continent's positive transformation.
The campus functions as a fully integrated educational and residential facility, housing academic buildings, student dormitories, faculty residences, dining facilities, and administrative offices. It is the central hub for all ALA programs.
The campus features modern classrooms, science and computer labs, an extensive library, an auditorium, sports facilities including pitches and courts, and purpose-built student and faculty housing. It is designed to foster a strong sense of community and collaborative learning.
The work culture at ALA is mission-driven, dynamic, and deeply collaborative. Staff and faculty are passionate about youth development and pan-Africanism, fostering an environment of innovation, intellectual curiosity, and mutual respect. There is a strong emphasis on mentorship and holistic student support.
The headquarters is significant as it is the physical manifestation of ALA's pan-African vision, bringing together young leaders from diverse backgrounds to learn and grow. It is a crucible for developing the skills and mindsets needed for transformative leadership in Africa.
While its physical campus is in South Africa, African Leadership Academy maintains a significant global presence. This is achieved through its diverse student body hailing from over 45 African countries, an extensive and active alumni network spread across the continent and the world, international recruitment drives, and strategic partnerships with global universities, corporations, and philanthropic organizations. Initiatives like the Anzisha Prize (in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation) further underscore its pan-African operational footprint by supporting young entrepreneurs continent-wide.
