The Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) is the UK's national academy representing the social sciences. Its mission is to promote social science in the United Kingdom for the public benefit. It achieves this by championing the vital role social sciences play in understanding and shaping society, informing policy, and improving people's lives. The Academy is composed of over 1,500 Fellows, who are leading academics and practitioners, and 47 Learned Societies, collectively representing nearly 90,000 social scientists. Key activities include conferring the prestigious title of Fellow (FAcSS), publishing reports and policy responses, organizing events, and advocating for social science funding and education.
The headquarters serves as the central administrative and operational hub for the Academy. It facilitates its policy work, fellowship administration, event coordination, communications, and engagement with stakeholders including government, academia, and the public.
Located in a professional office building in Finsbury Square, a prominent area in London known for business and finance. The office space is functional and designed to support the Academy's administrative and collaborative activities.
The work culture is professional, intellectually stimulating, and mission-driven, focused on collaboration and the advancement of social sciences. Staff work closely with Fellows and member societies.
As the central office, it's the focal point for the Academy's national activities, enabling it to effectively advocate for and represent the UK social science community.
The Academy of Social Sciences is primarily focused on the United Kingdom. However, its influence and collaborations extend internationally through its Fellows, many of whom are globally recognized, and its engagement with international social science organizations and research projects. It addresses global challenges through a social science lens and fosters international dialogue.
